Preparing for your Bernedoodle Puppy
Finally Going Home!
Finally Time To Go Home!
It is time to make preparations at home for your new precious bundle! Food bowl, water bowl, bed, toys, and crate! Think about the car ride home and what you will need in the car, and how to handle your puppy in the car. Your puppy has just left siblings, mom, and me so let’s make this ride home as stress free as possible. I think comforting your puppy is the most important thing here. Be sure you have wet wipes, paper towels, a couple of blankets, water bowl, and treats.
I recommend holding your puppy on your lap while someone else drives home. You holding your puppy will comfort him/her greatly, anxiety won’t be as bad, and he won’t associate bad behavior or anxiousness with riding in a car in the future. Your puppy may still get nausea, and have car sickness from the motion of riding, so have your wet wipes and paper towels handy, and also if possible a small trash bag. Stop for bathroom breaks often and in an area where there hasn’t been a lot of other dogs, for example a church parking lot. Talk to the puppy in a soothing voice and rub him gently, this will go a long way in easing his anxiety and being scared.
First Day at Home
First Day Home!
Being in a new home on that first day can be stressful. We recommend letting everyone in the home take a turn holding the puppy and comforting him/her. Start taking your puppy out for bathroom breaks on a schedule and just dive right into socializing your puppy to its new family. You will be amazed at how time spent in this manner will speed up the housebreaking process, help settle the puppy’s anxiety, and puts your puppy on the right social track. If there are small children in the home supervise them with the puppy, and explain to them how to play with the puppy. Sitting down with the puppy on the child’s lap will be the best and safest way to play with your Bernedoodle. Socializing outside the home needs to be done only after your puppy knows its new family and has developed a bond and trust so he/she will feel secure when introduced to new people.
TIP: Be careful where you take your pup for socializing. Don’t go to dog parks, pet stores, or any place where there will be a high concentration of dogs. Protect your puppy from these places until it is fully vaccinated and your vet gives you the OK to fully socialize. Parvo virus lives in the ground, hard surfaces, and cloth for months and months, so be very careful with your new precious puppy.
Feeding Your Puppy
What and How Much Do I Feed My Puppy?
When you take your puppy home he/she will be totally weaned from Mom and will be on dry kibble. We will send a week’s worth of Purina Pro Plan Chicken and Rice Formula home with you to feed your puppy. The feeding schedule will be ½ cup 3 times a day until you see your vet and then let them tell you how to proceed from there. The kibble that we send home will have probiotics added to it, so feed all of this first. Probiotics added to the puppy’s food will help keep the puppy’s stomach quiet between my home and adjusting to your home in those first few days.
